Washington paper is a traditional Japanese paper. The word "ashi" comes from wa meaning "Japanese" and hi meaning "paper". The term is used to describe paper that uses local fibers, hand-processed and made in the traditional way. The ashi is made using fiber from the inner bark of the Gampi tree, the Mitsusata bush, or the paper mulberry bush (kōzo). As a Japanese craft, it is registered in the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
